Cologne 101: Is cologne for guys supposed to go with your personality, or contrast with it?
I don't know. I thought it'd be better for it to add like, a contrast to your personality. Like if you were a happy go lucky guy, you would contrast it with a musky, woody scent, and if you were like the stoic manly man, contrast it with a light citrus or something like that.
Can anyone provide some cologne 101 for guys? HAHA.
It all depends on the person's confidence level. If the man is super confident they naturally would be able to pull off scents such as spicy orientals like Opium pour homme by Yves Saint Laurent in the heat of summer because first off they (hopefully) would know how much to apply but furthermore they would walk about with an air of confidence. If the man is really insecure, they could wear a woody leathery fragrance like John Varvatos Original in winter, where it is meant to be worn, but would struggle. Without that 'cool-guy' factor in their personality it might not work.
Fragrance can be used for a multitude of purposes but first and foremost I consider it an extension of my personality. If I have a rugged side but am normally a calm and collected person, I let it show with a dark fragrance like La Nuit de L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent or if I'm a joker and want people to know I mean business since deep down I do work hard, I would wear something like Green Irish Tweed by Creed.
I find myself choosing fragrance dependent on a few things:
-Weather (hotter weather would warrant cooler fragrances and vice-versa)
-Setting (If you're going to be in a business meeting, you don't want your scent greeting everyone as they enter. You want to get a little closer for that)
-Company (Meeting up old friends? You won't need to show personality through fragrance. First date? You know what I'm talking about....)
It really depends on if you can relate to the fragrance at all. If you hate leather-clad smokers and don't see yourself being one, would you like a fragrance that smells like tobacco and leather? If you answer yes, then it is completely possible for what you're asking to happen. If you answered no, then you'd be better off sticking within the bounds of what your personality traits are. Ultimately you want people to get a preview of you through your scent. If you are a manly man and wear a citrus fragrance, it gives your character depth and a mysterious factor. Why are you wearing such a calming scent yet look like you can bench 400lbs? Keeping women interested is important but only really matters if you are an interesting person in the first place. Don't expect fragrance to get you ladies, your confidence and "swagger" will get you that. Fragrance is there to BOOST your confidence, make you memorable if otherwise on the cusp and to just smell gooooooood.
